If there was one habit that you could change for better hair health in the comfort of your home, it has to be oiling your hair. Regular oiling makes a significant difference. Use of right oil makes it even better. It is well known that Coconut oil is nourishing and great for maintaining healthy hair. But Ayurveda recommends Bhringraj oil for balancing the body, promoting hair growth, reducing dandruff, and potentially slowing down the greying process.
Like many of the ancient herbs of folk medicine around the world, Bhringraj Oil is little studied. But its effects have been observed for hundreds of years. The herb belongs to the sunflower family and grows like a weed not just in India but also in Brazil and Thailand. In Ayurveda, leaves of the Bhringraj plant are heated with a carrier oil and used as Bhringraj oil. Today you can also find it as a powder or capsule. But oil continue to be the best medium for growing long and thick black hair. The oil is dark green. It also has a strong, unique scent that is easy to recognize.
1. Get the Right Bhringraj Oil Formulation
Before you buy Bhringraj oil, note that it is sold mixed with many different ingredients. Ideally, you should look for a formulation that doesn’t contain any mineral oils like liquid paraffin wax. Mineral oils are added to vegetable oils to make them feel less sticky, such as in Khadi’s bottle of Bhringraj Oil. But mineral oils can build up on your scalp and trap in dirt and contaminants, which is not helpful for hair health.
In ancient Ayurveda, mineral oils were rarely mixed with vegetable oils. Instead, it should be mixed with a simple carrier oil like sesame oil or coconut oil and a mixture of Amla juices and other herbs. Leave the jar in the sun until the colour changes to pale green in about two to three days. You can also heat powdered Bhringraj leaves with coconut oil and then store them.
3. How Does Bhringraj Oil Work for Hair Growth & Baldness?
One study on rats found that the oil increases the number of hair follicles in albino rats. The effects of the oil were compared with the impact of the popular Rogaine (modixil). The promising study suggested the this oil is better for hair growth than Rogaine. Of course, this was only an animal study. It needs to be repeated in humans. The benefits of the oil may come from the fact that it is rich in Vitamin E. Vitamin E helps to fight the toxins that can get in the way of hair follicles grow more hair. It may also have a cooling and reversible effect on hair fall caused by stress.
If you’re battling pattern baldness, you could rub some Bhringraj oil on your scalp at bedtime. Make sure to stimulate the follicles by gently massaging with your fingertips. Bhringraj oil, when used regularly, can stimulate the follicles to grow more hair.
If you don’t want to leave the oil on for too long, you could massage gently in a circular motion for 10 minutes. Leave on for an hour and then wash off.
4. How to Apply Bhringraj Oil?
The best way to use the oil for most people is to apply it to your scalp, massaging it gently with your fingers. Leave the oil on for around half an hour. The roots of your hair will absorb all the oils and nutrients during this time. Then you can wash it off with some gentle shampoo.
If you have dry hair, you can apply it and then wrap a warm towel around your hair for better absorption. The warmth of the towel will activate the glands in your scalp that produce nourishing oils.
5. Bhringraj Oil for Anti-Microbial Support & Dandruff
The oil also has anti-microbial properties. It helps to control the microbes that cause dandruff. If you have dandruff, you can apply the oil overnight. Simply warm it a little between your palms before you use. Wrap your head in a comfortable turban before bed. The next morning before you shampoo and condition your hair, you could rub a few drops of lemon juice through it. Lemon juice will reinforce the anti-microbial effects of the oil and add shine to dull hair.
6. Bhringraj Oil for Shine & Greying Prevention
It is said that Bhringraj oil helps to maintain the natural colour of your hair and prevent premature greying. There is little scientific evidence to suggest that anything can slow down the natural greying of hair. But the oil can improve hair quality, nourish it to enhance the appearance of split ends, make hair stronger. Note that there is a black dye derived from Bhringraj leaves used to colour greying hair.
7. Other Benefits
Bhringraj Oil is rich in vitamins D, E, calcium, iron, and magnesium. It may help promote sleep and relaxation, help prevent UTIs linked to bacteria, and help provide relief to inflamed skin. It’s been traditionally used as a topical oil on dermatitis and psoriasis.
